The Lost Foul Play Tapes

Every once in a while something pops up whilst speaking to producers about what they still have in their possession in the way of master recordings and this is definitely something very special.

In the process of contacting people we managed to track down John from legendary Hardcore / Jungle and DNB super group Foul Play. John was keen to get involved with the site and I started the usual process of trying to work out what tracks from the vast back cat of tracks was available.

Imagine my shock when John told us that not only did he have DAT (“Digital Audio Tapes” – these were the industry standard way of recording masters for track before CD burning technology became cheap enough for people to start using) Tapes in his possession but he was also aware that there was a quantity of unreleased material on the tapes that he knew had not even been given to DJ’s back in the day when the tracks were made for one reason or another.

After failing to find a working DAT machine in his town John sent the lot to us to record so we could check to see if they were still up to release standard. This lead to a nice surprise on the following Saturday morning when the post man knocked on the door and gave me a envelope containing 9 DATS!

John had kindly gone through to the best of his knowledge and worked out the dates the tracks were made (From 1996 through to 1999) and supplied a breakdown of what was on what tape.

Some of the DATS contained tracks previously released on other labels and also contained all of the tracks released on Foul Plays “Panik” Record label (also available in our shop).

The full list of unreleased tracks is as follows:

Word – 1996
Werk – 1996
Drama – 1996
Terraform – 1997
Espionage – 1997
Citadel – 1998
The 65th Parallel – 1998
Legion – 1998
Mephisto – 1999

All in all a great haul and a really good showcase of various styles from Foul Play. As yet we are unsure which ones will make it to release as it is up to John to decided what he is happy for us to release but we hope to be able to bring as much of this collection to you via the site.
